A Short Story About a Longstanding Tradition
Maynard’s In Maine was founded in 1919 by Walter Maynard. Walter came to find his dream of running a sportsman’s camp by sheer fate, after a long hard life he met a man with the last name Wilson. Mr. Wilson showed Walter the life of a Maine Guide which would lead to Walter starting his own guide business with his own Maine cabin rentals only 10 miles away from Wilson’s.
Twelve out of the thirteen cabin rentals we have are original to the camp ground, most were built by Walter, himself, a few friends he had and anyone who could pound a nail straight. Some were even built in a day or two. The main lodge would come last being originally named “The Firs”, this was the first name that our establishment was given. Sadly after burning down in a fire, the main lodge and business would get a new name, Maynard’s In Maine.
After running Maynard's for 32 years Walter passed away leaving his business to his son Roger. Roger would then head Maynard’s for 45 years until he too passed leaving Maynard's to his only son William. William and his wife now continue to run the family business of Maine cabin rentals and family style restaurant with the help of their children and grandchildren, extending out six generations. William and his wife have been running the business for 53 years now. Out of all the years Maynard's has been running we have never seen a year like 2020.
2020 was a year of firsts, changes and challenges for us - and it's not even June! This year Maynard's turns 102 years old, we have deep roots in Rockwood. We understand these are trying times for our whole community and we are doing our best to lend a hand when someone needs it. Nothing about the current situation is normal or easy. The whole Maynard's family would like to thank all our family, friends and guests who have helped us in opening up safely. Also thank you all so much for having patience and understanding that things have to be a little different around here for longer than we hoped.
Here is to a new year to fishing, hunting, family time on the water and good meals. We hope you will all still support us and join us making new memories - even if we have to do it a little differently this year.
